Here a look at the new Quickies created by a/some student/s from MIT.

"The electronic note system is instead based around a digital pen and special pad, which saves your notes as you jot them down on RFID-embedded Post-Its. Software on your PC then does some quick OCR and, according to the inventors, "uses its understanding of the user's intentions, content, and the context of the notes to provide the user with reminders, alerts, messages, and just-in-time information." Since the database can also store location information, sticking the note on a book or other object allows you to locate it later using the RFID tag, and you can even have notes SMS'd to their recipients." 1. 3-4 years back this was one of the most wanted applications for a ubuntu system, "Alien" is a software tool which can convert an .rpm to a .deb package and vice versa.But currently ubuntu has become very rich with its centralized repositories that this software has lost its charm...but not the least i find many server applications and many more softwares still available only in Rpms or in Srcs but not in debs..so still Alien has some work to do.

First Day @ Intel India.

Reporting time 8.30Am,but i was there by 8 o'clock,waiting at the lobby for ....actually don't know but was waiting there because everybody else was waiting.Later i came to know that i had to go in and get a badge with my photo on it.

Soon i was called in for a photo shot to be put on my badge.."See the camera...See the camera" said the security guard..but i could not explain him that i was in fact watching the camera.Finally i got my ID with my face on the ID looking as if i lost everything in my life and dint know what to do next in life...[:-)].Then we moved on to attend a training session which was actually meant for new employees but even the interns had to attend it.It was called "NEO" not to confuse with the name of the hero in "The Matrix" but to mean "New Employee Orientation".Unfortunately we had to sit in the First Row, we were given a few packages which had GOODIES for us,we got a pen with a pen drive, some stationary etc...

Apart from the GOODIES everything else was boring.We were brainwashed on topics like Harassments,Security ,code of conduct blah blah blah..We even had a team work or i could say a group discussion on the Values of Intel.Then started the most interesting and anticipated moment the Lunch Break.Lunch was good and relatively cheaper @ 32rs per meal, but the most important fact was that COKE was FREE,COFFEE was FREE and blah blah blah...Then back to the boring session of Harassment,but actually the session was good because the instructor was funny and he made the whole session funny.

And it was 5 pm whooof...the day was over...we came back to the cafeteria and had some snacks again with those FREE stuff and left the campus at 5 30 .

Snapshots of "LIFE @ IIIT-B"

I actually wanted to write this post way long back but thought that now would be a good time to write it..though is actually late by a week.

Back on 27th July 2006 , I came around to start a new beginning in my life,I joined IIIT-B.I and all my friends were very eager to "learn,develop,innovate...blah blah blah"[BAP ka sapna.. :-) ].The first month was very "interesting",we dint understand any thing told in the class especially Prof.Prassanas (i still dont understand his class...), and that was why it was very interesting.We were all doomed when we saw the first sem projects.We were all trying to get to know each other,get to know our seniors,get used to the food...blah blah blah.

Then came our mighty TA's to help us in our difficult times...but we soon realized that they were the persons who created the difficult times...[:-),...i am also a TA now].we had a rocking time writing tests which used to start @ 12 midnight, classes which used to stretch for 3 hrs at a time,project discussions @ nights...it went to an extent were we "thought" our life is fucked up and that it was a utter wrong decision to come here in our life...[ps:still not conformed].But soon we became immune to the problems and then started to like the system and then started the actual "LIFE @ IIIT-B".

Second Sem was the most amazing time in college. Less of studies and more of movies and masti.Watching movies was the only thing we did in the second sem, its like if i had to write any thing about in second sem then i have to write movie reviews [:-)]. Soon when there was decreasing supply of movies to meet the demand, there started a new concept called the "Innofest". This was a college fest organized for the first time. This event was a very big success not only because is reached our expected number of people but also because it brought about a team spirit among all of us.

Summer Term was a boring part of "LIFE @ IIIT-B", though the prof's glorified its importance,it was very Dull and pathetic. People started slogging towards the end of summer term to finish their Marketing Project,but then it was a big disaster at last.

Third Sem was supposed to be a very easy going semester of all,but it was the most roughest semester for most of us.Hell lot of project work, course work, Ta'ship, and also games,movies and yeah "Corner House" too, we were the major part of 3rd sem.And last but not the least were the internship placements.Though it went on smoothly it was still a hell rocking time for all of us in the college.

Actually i have a lot in mind,heart and other organs to add to this post but thought that "LIFE @ IIIT-B" is not yet over so guys lets chill out..i would be adding to this post when i reach the actual climax of "LIFE @ IIIT-B". Ok ok i got to go and watch a movie..

The Best From Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs

Even though all the 10 scientific breakthrough's (http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2007/12/YE_10_breakthroughs) display brilliance, i found that 2 breakthroughs are really very interesting and display the humans capability to adapt and evolve to his environment.

1.Convert any Blood Group into 'O' Group

as cited in wired mag:

"In April, Henrik Clausen, a professor at the University of Denmark, published research in Nature describing a way to convert any kind of blood into Type O -- the type that almost anyone can tolerate. He discovered enzymes that shear the problem-causing sugars from the surfaces of A, B and AB type red blood cells. Produced by bacteria, the molecular machines could theoretically turn any kind of blood into Type O. Clausen and his colleagues described their search for the pacifying proteins in the April 1 issue of Nature Biotechnology."

This provides an incredible solution for the shortage of blood all over the world and also helps immensely in emergency situations, and hey.. this also marks the end of scenes in films where the 'doc' asks for blood and the hero cannot find the right kind of blood group..(:-) ).

And the invention is already taking shape as "ZymeQuest, a startup company from Massachusetts, is now developing a device that hospitals can use during blood shortages."


2.Convert Skin cells into stem cells

as cited in wired mag:
"Using a virus to reprogram skin cells, two teams of scientists managed to skirt the greatest ethical issue facing regenerative medicine -- the destruction of human embryos. Groups led by Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University and Junying Yu of the University of Wisconsin coaxed a type of skin cell called fibroblasts into forming muscle, heart, fat and nerve tissues without using any eggs. Unfortunately, the hijacked cells often became tumors. Following up on his initial discovery this November, Yamanaka told Nature Biotechnology that by inserting three growth genes instead of four, the lab-grown flesh can be controlled without becoming cancerous."

This invention when successful would eliminate the requirement to store the stem cells and allow doc's to get stem cells when ever required, and as we know having stems cells can cure any organ with any problem. Imagine a person whose liver is damaged due to heavy drinking and his liver repaired only to allow him to drink again...(kudos to the researcher :-) ).

23andMe

Today i have come across a really cool and awesome start up "23andMe" @ www.23andme.com
This is a company which takes our blood sample and extracts the DNA information from it and then does a hell lot of analysis on it. It can tell you what diseases you may be exposed to, what all you have inherited from your parents (except the money :-) ) and also where your ancestors are from. The real great fun or interesting thing is it does not stop here...guess what Google has invested in this company heavily(maybe i think so),why? This company is aiming to create a social networking site from the people who are having similarities from the DNA samples collected by this company. For example u can find all the people in the world who have say high risk of cancer or diabetes or all those who dislike milk etc. All this is provided for the user at a relatively low cost ( :-) ) of $1000. But imagine google giving a online search for the DNA database,or an extension to orkut with DNA profiling. I really feel like working for this company and guess what these are some of the benefits the company gives
